Seascape Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, "Pink Clouds" , 11x14x1.5" Oil SOLD

I live close to the sea, and it turns up quite often in my art. Nothing gets me up faster than a fabulous sunrise...grab a cup of coffee and head for the beach, camera in hand.

SOLD
Yes, I said grab my camera, not my paints.  I am a studio painter.  I quickly get overwhelmed with plein aire and have no desire to try it again.  Give me my air conditioning, plumbing and subject matter that doesn't change.

For years, I felt I was not a "real artist" and hid my shameful secret.  Actually, I have so much respect for artists that strap a 36x48" canvas on their back and then hike 7,000 feet to the top of a mountain to paint.  Such dedication, and yes, the light cannot be duplicated.  But, neither can those special effects you can capture with a camera.

My choices are paint in a studio, or don't paint.....and I am happy with the choice I made.  To each his own!

Thanks for reading my rant today :)

Where Am I Going?, Small Oil Paintings, Daily Paintings

Traditionally, this time of the year,  is when we evaluate our performance, over the last twelve months, and look at the direction we are headed.

Artistically, I see nothing but question marks.  I want to have a clear plan, a path to follow and mark my progress, but alas, it evades me.

I looked through my posts from last year, and picked out my favorite pieces, hoping against hope that they will tell me where I am headed.

 Abstract Expressionism?

Maybe....

Thick Paint?

 Impressionism?

 Brushwork?
 Knife?

Really thin paint?

Or does it really matter?

All this thinking is making my head hurt!

I am happy I found this many pieces, from last year, that speak to ME.  I am happy with them which makes me happy with me.

Maybe 2020 will find me treading the straight and narrow.....but somehow, I don't think so.

Thank you all, for joining me on my crazy, unplanned journey!

Beach Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, "Caribbean" by Carol Schiff, 16x20,1.5" Oil SOLD

Have you ever been to the Islands?  In Florida "the Islands" can only mean one thing.....any of those gorgeous, laid-back, tropical paradise places starting with the Abaco's Islands to the north and extending down the coast of South American to Granada.

The water color is amazing and I never get tired of gazing at it.  The air is hot and sultry, everyone moves in slow motion.......island time.  The people are amazing and you feel like you are living in a Ernest Hemingway novel.

Once we spent a week on Eleuthera  with our grown childen,  and every morning one of our neighbors would leave a fresh pineapple on our porch.  Yummy, best Pina Colada ever!  We would walk to the bakery every morning for fresh Bahama bread for our breakfast.  In the afternoons, the entire island population would gather on the dock to buy fresh fish.  The fishermen would lay their catch on the dock and the housewives would gather around to pick their dinner.

Every day we found another isolated, beautiful beach to enjoy.  Evenings were spent sitting on the porch, laughing, enjoying each other.  It was a throw back to another, simpler life and we all enjoyed it immensely.

Florida Breezy Day Palm Tree Painting, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting

I am loving being back in Florida!  So much inspiration!

Here on the east coast, land of the Florida Highwaymen and AC Backus painters, it's hard to avoid the  scenes that inspired so many pieces of art.

Florida Seascape Painting, small oil painting, daily painting

I created this small seascape from my memories of the beautiful beaches that surround us here in the state of Florida.

SOLD
I painted with a brush and pallet knife to show texture in the waves rushing to shore and the sea oats rising above the protective dunes.

The more I travel, the more I am in awe of our beautiful world, including the beauty of my home states.  It is so easy to forget the beauty that surrounds you.  Take a moment today to find your beauty.

Starfish Beach Treasure Original Oil Painting, Beachy Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting

I found this starfish on one of my beach walks.  Just one of the many joys of living on the coast of Florida.

I didn't pick it up, but left it in the surf and snapped a quick photo of it.  I painted with brush and palette knife.

This small seascape is a study for a much larger piece.  The only question in my mind is "How large?"

I am very happy with the understated color which makes the brighter hues really pop.  I am not sure if it would be call an abstract or impressionistic.......what do you think?

What I do know, I really enjoyed painting it and want to try it again and go BIG!

Ocracoke Island Abstract Oil Painting, Small Oil Painting, Daily Abstract Painting, Palette Knife Painting, SOLD

The Outer Banks on North Carolina have been on my mind.  I was thinking of Ocracoke when I painted this little abstract seascape.

The Outer Banks is like no other place I have visited. Surrounded by water, the residents are a hardy type who take pride in providing for themselves.  The danger of living there, is still felt, as the tropical storms and hurricanes devastate the dunes and road on a regular basis.  In earlier times, shipwrecks littered the beaches.

I painted with a palette knife and oils, leaving it as raw and wild as the beaches.

Thanks for viewing my art today.

Abstract Seascape, Coastal Home Decor, Textured Art, SOLD

For me, the best time to visit the beach is sunrise or sunset.  It is such a spiritual experience.

Purchase Here

In the morning, I am usually alone.  Just me, my camera, the birds, and possible a lone fisherman, trying his luck.

detail
At sunset, you may not be alone, but in a group of spectators standing in awe as the sun sinks into the sea.

Both experiences will enrich your day.

I am still in a seascape frame of mind.

This is worked with a palette knife.  I enjoy lots of texture, so I left it on this piece.  Maybe it is more of a skyscape?   Maybe it is more abstract or impressionistic?  Whatever it is, it reflects my mood at the time, which I think, is the point of painting.
