Reproducing my Oil Painting in Mosaic, Daily Painting, Goody Bye Oils, Hello Mosaic!

Stuart’s Creek District Sidewalk Mosaic Program is in full swing as mosaicist #3, Carol Schiff, works to complete her dolphin design and voting is open for the fourth mosaic artist! Project coordinators, Corina Pelloni and Diane Concepcion are eager to share their wealth of knowledge with anyone who wants to explore the world of mosaic creations.  The Rickie Report gives you some sneak peeks of Carol’s work as all we information about voting for Mosaic Artist #4 and classes.

Carol is a very skilled and experienced oil painter. Mosaic art is a new medium for her. A pleasure to have in the studio, she has been working diligently on her winning design, and has really taken to mosaic art like a… dolphin to water.

Here is Carol’s original painting shown next to her work-in-progress:

Carol is a Florida oil painter who loves the coastal beaches, flora and fauna of this tropical paradise. Her second love is the Asheville/Blue Ridge Mountains area. Her art features both of these sites.

Her painting style is characterized by exciting brushwork, contrast, hues, and texture from palette knives. She skillfully applies these techniques to images of landscapes, still lifes and animals.

With a client list that includes Warner Brothers, Netflix, CBS, Disney Channel and Duke University, you may have seen one of her paintings on the screen. One painting is in the 2019 movie ‘The Joker’. A few more make appearances in popular TV shows Magnum PI and Hawaii 5-0.

To see more of her work, visit her shop on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/shop/CarolSchiffStudio

Carol’s mosaic will be completed in a few more sessions. Then, it will be installed near Herban Botanicals on Colorado Ave, and we’ll gather to celebrate a new piece of public art in Downtown Stuart’s Creek District of Arts and Entertainment.

There’s more:

Don’t miss your opportunity to vote on the design for the 4th mosaic!

The location for this artwork will be the sidewalk at the intersection of 5th Street and A1A near Kiwanis Park. Both finalists designs are beautiful original artworks submitted by brilliant local artists, Marian Vitale and Deborah Bottorf.

Wondering  if  you’d  like  to  try  mosaic  art?

All are welcome to enter a design for consideration. When a contest is open, it will be accessible by the link above, and that’s also where information about the program can be found.

Another option is to take an intro to mosaics class. Classes are offered at Flagler Center on the first Saturday and third Wednesday of each month. You must register in advance for a workshop. Swan Oil Painting, Daily Painting, "Swan Reflections" by Carol Schiff, 16x20x.75 Oil SOLD

On most mornings, I take a walk around the neighborhood.  Everyday, I would pass this beautiful creature and his mate, gliding across the water of a small pond.  When I saw the photograph I was able to take, I knew I would want to paint it.
SOLD
I painted with brush and palette knife and was able to obtain a nicely textured surface to indicate the water.
The background, which was difficult to photograph correctly, is a mixture of a rich brown and a greenish dark.

detail

I have done several paintings using the reference images I took that day.  One is a 11x14 pastel and one is a 6x8 oil.  I am glad I had my camera that day because the birds are gone now.  I like to think they just flew away.

Thank you for viewing my daily painting today.   I hope you will pin it!

abstract expressionist painting, contemporary art, daily painting, small abstract art, small oil painting,

I was feeling the need to get abstract again and wanted to experiment with some gold leaf I had in my bag of tricks.

Purchase here
SOLD

I have to say I had lots of fun with this piece.  I wanted to keep the colors fairly neutral....black, white, gray, rust.  I had a piece of watercolor paper that had already been treated with a rusting technique, so the plan was to let some of that background show through.  I also wanted to incorporate that gold leaf.  I worked with a palette knife to get plenty of texture.  All in all, I had a great time!  Kind of like making mud patties when you were six....that same feeling. :)

Sweet Success! A daily painter makes it into the movies.

Today is a special day for me!

It's the premiere opening of the new
Joaquin Phoenix - Robert DeNiro movie, "Joker".

Warner Brother's purchased this painting from me, as set design, several months ago.  They were filming in Brooklyn, at the time, and I have been waiting to see it released.

They chose this small (8x10") still life painting.  I envision that it will be hanging on the wall of some dark and dreary brownstone, decorated in the style of your great grandmother.

Thanks for viewing my blog today!

Palette Knife Paintings and Technique

The most enjoyable experiences, I get out of painting, almost always involves a palette knife.  I may start out with a brush in hand, but eventually the knife takes over.

This was my first experience.  I started on a canvas with a half finished painting.  One I had lost interest in ever finishing.

If you are interested in painting with a palette knife, you might want to check out this tutorial.  I found it to be very helpful.

Rural Landscape Painting, Autumn Painting,Daily Painting, Palette Knife Painting, 11x14" Oil

A scene that is found everywhere, in my new state, North Carolina.  Maybe not everywhere, but, everywhere around here in the Asheville area.

We are just getting hints of fall.  A maple will have one red branch, while the rest of the tree is still green.  But I can sense that it WANTS to be red!

Purchase here

This is my first autumn as a resident in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and I am excited!

Hope your day is colorful, too!

Daily Painting, Seagull Painting, "The Three Stooges" by Carol Schiff, 6x8 Oil, SOLD

The three birds in today's daily painting look a little goofy to me.  Maybe they are hungry, or maybe they are plotting against another, but I just don't trust them.

SOLD
They remind me of my childhood and the notorious "Three Stooges", Larry, Moe and Curly.
You remember them don't you?  They were always getting into trouble.

They are looking at a fourth seagull....not in this painting, and I don't think it is in a friendly manner!  I hope to do a second painting of this group, including the fourth member.

The reference photo was shared from Shelley Smart at her wonderful blog here.  Shelley is a fantastic photographer and generous too.  She gave me permission to use her image years ago.  I hope you will visit her interesting blog, "A Year at the Beach", where she recorded the activity on the beach every day.

Tropical Landscape Painting, Coastal Wall Decor, Palm Trees on the Shoreline, Tropical Giclee Print On Canvas

You would think that with everyone staying at home , with our activities curtailed, that time would drag.  I find it to be just the opposite.

Purchase here

Of course I did sell a house and buy another house and move 700 miles away and have contractors in my house most days for months.

So, time flew for me, and for most of the year, I had no time or inclination to paint.  Finally, I am back in the studio!

It is very reassuring for me to get back to normal activity, in at least one aspect of my life.

I hope your finding a little silver lining in your life too.

I created this small seascape from my memories of the beautiful beaches that surround us here in the state of Florida.

SOLD
I painted with a brush and pallet knife to show texture in the waves rushing to shore and the sea oats rising above the protective dunes.

Abstract Seascape | Daily Painting | "Tropical Blues" by Carol Schiff | 6x8" Oil SOLD

When I lived close to the sea, I found that it turned up in my painting in both a representative and non-representative form.  I guess this little daily painting falls somewhere between the two.

SOLD

I painted this with a palette knife.  I like texture and feel it adds additional interest to my art.  I was thinking about the beautiful greens and blues of the tropical waters off the coast of Florida.  Further south they turn the most amazing shades of azure, but that will be another painting.

I almost always show my paintings in black frames.  It would be hard to find an artwork that would not work well with black and it just makes the colors pop.
