Palette Knife Still Life, Bottle Still Life, "Pretty In Pink Cross Bottle" by Carol Schiff, 6x8" Oil, Daily Painting

Are you a fan of cross bottles?  I recently discovered them and have become obsessed with them.   Cross bottles are vintage (usually) bottles that have been reclaimed.  A talented artist then designs a crystal cross or  other design as a top piece.  Many of the crystals come from discarded chandeliers.  I have also seen them with beautiful arrangements of sea shells, coral and sea fans.

As with all good art, they can become quite pricey, so after purchasing several, I decided to try to feed by obsession by painting instead of buying, much to my husband's relief.

I don't know how long that will work for me, but at the moment, it does seem to help.

If you are not familiar with cross bottles, seach for them on Etsy or Ebay where you will find a nice selection.  Beware!!  It may be dangerous to the viewer!

Horse Painting, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting, "Buckskin Mare" by Carol Schiff, 8x10.1.5" Oil

I had a request for another horse painting,  I have not done many of them, but I also enjoy them.  It started with a ride through the valleys of the Blue Ridge Mountains in western North Carolina, where I found several horses grazing.  The buckskin was particularly friendly, coming up to the fence to great us and posing for several photographs.

I found it difficult to mix the correct color of this animal, but finally was happy with the results.  I used a palette knife in the background of this small oil painting,  to create the texture of the grasses in the meadow.

Wildlife Painting, Daily Painting, "Great Blue Heron" by Carol Schiff, 11x14x1.5" Oil

It's always tricky trying to do a wildlife painting.  The tricky part is getting that perfect photo to work from.  With this daily painting, I got lucky!

My group, Pieces of Eight, was touring Sebastian, Fl.  On the way home we made a quick stop at the riverside park in Grant looking for wildlife and other scenes.  I was out on the fishing dock and this beautiful Great Blue Heron was standing there on the railing, interested in stealing a fish from the fishermen.  He held his ground when I inched closer, and closer.  I got several good close-up shots.  This was my favorite pose.

I painted this in oil with palette knife and brush, on 11x14x1.5" gallery wrap canvas.  The sides are painted black.  I just love the substantial feel of gallery wrap canvases. If you are interested in a wildlife painting for your home, perhaps you will consider this one.

Thank you for reading my blog today.

Cow Painting, Daily Painting, "Bovine Portrait" by Carol Schiff, 11x14 Oil on Linen

A client wanted a cow painting, for licensing purposes.  I usually do daily painting of still life or landscape, but I have to admit I enjoyed both the horse, they originally chose,  and this cow painting.

I painted on Senso linen canvas.  I had a pad of the linen around for several years but didn't really know what to do with it.  I found it had a different texture than the cotton canvas I usually paint on, but once I got into the painting, it was fine.

My next problem was what to do with this unstretched painting.  After surveying several friends, I mounted it on a cradled wood panel.  I was told the perfect glue to use is YES GLUE available at craft stores.  I had some in my stash and I have to say it worked like a charm.  Then I trimmed the edges with a exacto knife and it turned out perfectly.  Now I can use the rest of my Senso linen canvas with no fear!

So, today I stretched my limits, both with the Senso canvas and the cow painting, and luckily both worked out for me!

Whenever I feel the need to push my art, I turn to abstract.  This time,  I wanted some representation in the piece.

Commission a Painting to your specifications, by Carol Schiff

Today's post is just a little different.  Recently, I sold a small marsh painting to a client in another state.  Since she could not see the art in person before she purchased it, she was surprised and dismayed by the size of the piece.

She really loved the painting, but it just wouldn't work in her space.  We decided to repaint it in a much larger format.  When the commission was ready to ship, I sent her this image of both works, allowing her to see that the colors and scene were similar and also to judge the size of the original against the new piece.

She was thrilled and the story has a happy ending for all.

If you have a special image or would like one of my works in another size, please feel free to contact me for a price quote.  I would love to hear from you.

Abstract Seascape, Daily Painting, "Tropical Blues" by Carol Schiff, 6x8" Oil

Living close to the sea, I find it turns up in my painting in both a representative and non-representative form.  I guess this little daily painting falls somewhere between the two.

I painted this with a palette knife.  I like texture and feel it adds additional interest to my art.  I was thinking about the beautiful greens and blues of the tropical waters off the coast of Florida.  Further south the turn the most amazing shades of azure, but that will be another painting.

I almost always show my paintings in black frames.  It would be hard to find an artwork that would not work well with black and it just makes the colors pop.

Start planning that tropical vacation today!

Don't forget to pin it on your vacation board.

Small Abstract Painting, Church Painting "The Safe Place" by Carol Schiff, 6x8" Oil

I have been dabbling with abstracts for some time, and now have started to add some structures to the mix.

I am always attracted to old churches, and this one is rather special.  It is a local landmark in our town.  I worked right next door for twenty plus years, so I saw it every day.  Now, it also serves as a cold weather shelter for the homeless.

I tried to focus on color interaction as well as texture and abstraction.  I am happy with the results.

Daily Painting, Abstract Landscape, "Lighting the Heavens" by Carol Schiff, 12x24x.75" Oil

In this painting, my goal was to capture that magic moment when the sun just peeks through the horizon and night turns to day.

For me, that is the best moment.......knowing I have a brand new day to enjoy.

I did my favorite palette knife technique (which I have labeled color weaving) on this.  I find it gives me a great way to blend from one color to another.
